There are many great campsites for cyclists in France – here are some of the best from the Alan Rogers guide to the best campsites for walkers and cyclists. Please add any of your own recommendations into the comments at the end. Merci!
Many campsites in France are located in picturesque settings, close to dedicated cycling routes or quieter country roads that are ideal for cycling holidays. All the campsites listed below are near scenic cycling routes, often starting directly from the campsite's gates.

Les Abrets is well placed for visits to the Savoie regions and the Alps. It is an attractive, well maintained site of 192 grass pitches (178 for tourers). This is a popular, family-run site with friendly staff, making it a wonderful base for exploring the area. Set in the Dauphiny countryside north of Grenoble, Le Coin Tranquille is truly a ?quiet corner?, especially outside school holiday times.

A family site aimed mainly at couples and young families, le Saint-Martin is a welcome change from most of the sites in this area in that it has only a relatively small number of mobile homes (127) compared to the number of touring pitches (383). A neat, tidy, well cared for site with direct access to a wonderful sandy beach. The pitches are mainly typically French in style with low hedges separating them, and with some shade.

A secluded holiday village set in the heart of the forest, Camping les Alicourts is midway between Orléans and Bourges. There are 490 pitches, 150 for touring and the remainder occupied by mobile homes and chalets. Locations vary, from wooded to more open areas, thus giving a choice of amount of shade. The leisure amenities are exceptional.

The Dusserm family, the owners, are very proud of their regional culture and heritage and will ensure you are made welcome. The reception is friendly, with an area for local foods, maps and good tourist information. This site is special because of its range of activities, including tai chi, qi gong, massage, archery, walking, climbing and canoeing. There are 38 touring pitches, as well as mobile homes and chalets. The mountain view from the terrace is magnificent.

A delightful family campsite situated in a country setting on the edge of the marshes. It is beautifully kept and has excellent facilities. Of the 120 pitches, 52 are available for touring: the established pitches offer some shade and have electricity and water nearby; a new area offers large pitches with electricity, water and drainage, but bushes and trees have yet to mature. The beaches are just seven kilometres away.

This attractive, high quality and lively site, ideal for families with young children, is in a rural setting and well situated for exploring the eastern part of the Loire Valley. Two lakes (one for boating, one for fishing) and a pool complex have been attractively landscaped in 12 hectares of former farmland, blending old and new with natural wooded areas and open fields with rural views. There are 260 large, level grass pitches with 130 for touring units.

A modern, high quality chalet complex with panoramic views. Located 4km from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and 800m from Lagorce, the domaine is an old winery which has been sensitively converted. Rest and relaxation is the theme here and the restaurant has a good reputation.
