Located near the sandy coast and pretty marine town of Douarnenez with its cafe-lined marina and wonderful seafood restaurants, this site is a good base from which to explore this part of coastal Brittany (bike hire is available onsite if you don't have your own wheels). There is already a superb coastal hiking path along this section of the coast and the new Route 5 Littoral-Roscoff-Saint Nazaire is being developed to open it up to bikes. A voie verte already connects Douarnenez to Quimper via a disused railway line. For after your ride, the Woodpecker restaurant and pub provides local food and drinks (including home-made pizzas and local cider). We wished we'd known about this place when we went to the Vuelta in 2016 when we were looking for cycling accommodation in Laruns. The Green Bike Pyrenees chalet is – as the name suggests – a dedicated biking base. Located in the Ossau Valley, it has three mythical cols from the Tour de France on the door step: the Col d’Aubisque, Soulor, and Marie Blanque. Other cols like Tourmalet, Pourtalet and La Pierre St Martin are within reach. The owners Mireille and Nick are involved in cycling at different levels, so they understand your needs and can cater for them. You just cycle and they will handle the rest (including booking you a sauna or sports massage at the local spa for when you get in!) Bikes can be safely stored in a lockable garage, plus there are cleaning facilities, a workshop with work stand, and spares. English, French, Spanish spoken.

Mike's keen to see more cyclists use his 1981 vintage 'glamping' caravan situated in his orchard near Chalabre and Mirepoix – a rural area tucked in the foothills of the Pyrenees but still only 50km south of the Canal du Midi. The caravan has an eco system, solar electricity and a composting loo. When we spoke to Mike, he was also putting in a new sunroof to cover both the caravan and the decking. It makes an interesting self-catered option for riders exploring this 'hidden' part of the south of France, and the views of the lower Pyrenees are a bonus. There is a garage available in the nearby main house for bike storage. (The van can be booked via Mike's main accommodation website).

Situated in a large garden next to private woodland ‘Le Petit Hibou’ (Little Owl) is a peaceful, cosy retreat in the grounds a family run cycling holidays business. Perfect for couples or friends, the cabin sleeps two people, has a wood burner for chilly nights, an ensuite shower and toilet, kitchenette and a wood-fired Scandinavian hot tub for post-ride relaxation. It's perfect year-round. Ideal for touring cyclists looking for a place to call their own for a night or two, or even a week-long training base. There's fresh produce available locally (don't miss the Sunday market in nearby Saint-Antonin), or you can take a package that includes food. With the Gorges d'Aveyron on the doorstep, there are spectacular views (and roads), and lots to see and do. The cabin provides a perfect base for more leisurely cycling as well as challenging roadie routes. It's cyclist-run, so there's lots of in-house bikey knowledge (there isn't a local road Marcus hasn't ridden). Hybrid bikes available in-house (road bikes and e-bikes can also be hired locally), train and airport transfers available. English and French spoken.
