Spectacular views and direct access to the historic D-Day beach

Camping Omaha Beach is in a spectacular location, perched on the clifftop and offering direct beach access and stunning sunrises. Tent pitches, plus sites for caravans and campervans. There are also mobile homes of varying quality and sizes. Mini-supermarket and bar/restaurant open during peak season. Kids' playground with trampolines and bouncy castles. Pool. The site itself and its facilities are showing their age a bit and this place isn't as slilck as many newer campsites, but for locatioin it's hard to beat if you want to be near Omaha Beach.

Ideal for the Canal de Garonne and Lot Valley bikes routes

This clean and friendly chain hotel comes recommended to us by cyclists who rode the Canal de Garonne bike route between Bordeaux and Toulouse. It is also close to where the Garonne River meets the Lot River (and its bike route) at Aiguillon (hence the 'confluence' in the title). The hotel is registered as an accueil velo place to stay and regularly sees cyclists through. Modern and friendly, it has crisp and interesting interior design that sets it apart from regular chain hotels. This is a good option if you're looking for a clean and reliable base for a night. On site restaurant and bar but may not be open at weekends during the low season.

Modern hotel that's been recommended to us by cyclists

This really is a nice place to stay (checkout that bathroom above!) It was recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here at the end of their Burgundy cycling holiday. This is a private house that's been converted into a small, modern hotel that's very welcoming to cyclists. When I contacted the management, they said they could store some bikes in the hotel; if they have groups in, they use a locked room in a secure public parking complex near the hotel. They also provide maps ("with pleasure!" they said) and can help with bike hire.  The onsite restaurant is also a treat with Michelin stars and a wine list with a who's who of local winemakers.  Free wifi. Recommended by Hilde and Heather, who stayed here during their cycling trip from Dinan to St-Malo, the Hôtel Océan Dinan (formerly the Hotel Au Refuge) is situated in the centre of the old town of Dinan. In no particular order there's a bar, secure parking for bikes, and you can load up on breakfast for an extra €6.50. The hotel is situated about 30km from Saint-Malo, so it's a good stop en route to ferries, and about 60km from Mont Saint Michel.

Domfront - Numéro CINQ B&B (Veloscenie + Velo Francette)

Super bike-friendly townhouse B&B on two major French bike routes

It's always a good sign when a B&B owner emails to provide some small snippet of information about a local bike route. That's how I found out that Jacie's Numéro CINQ B&B at the crossroads of two major national bike routes: Veloscenie Paris to Mont St Michel and the splendid Velo Francette from Caen to La Rochelle. Numéro CINQ is wonderfully set up for cyclists: dusters and rags are available to clean down baggage and bikes, hot or cold drinks are offered on arrival, and there's an SOS collection service offered within 20km for punctured or broken down bikers. The B&B is just a two-minute walk from the Medieval Domfront town centre and its bars and restaurants. English and French spoken. For anyone wanting a break from long-distance riding, there's lots of beautiful local cycling on offer if you fancy a fixed base for a few days (think small local roads, farmland, and apple and pear orchards). For those with a car, it's a 40-minute drive from Mayenne or half an hour into the Suisse-Normandie for hillier rides.

Family run hotel at the crossroads of the Veloscenic and La Velo Francette

Situated in the historic old town of Domfront, the Hotel de France is a perfect base for both the Veloscenic and La Velo Francette. Don't let its bright red signage and strip motel appearance put you off. Hotel de France's rather banal facade hides a multitude of delights. Not least, the welcoming family-run vibe with everyone – from the grandchild to the dog – featured in the picture. There's safe and secure bike storage in a curtained-off section of the dining hall. Pretty riverside hotel on the Veloscenic Paris to Mont St-Michel bike route

An unexpected gem of a hotel in Ducey. The historic stone mill's been cleverly and very tastefully converted into a modern boutique hotel, prettily located on the banks of the river Selune (famed for its salmon fishing). Bikes are locked safely behind a locked gate, though the area's not undercover. There's a laundry service for wet or smelly bike kit, plus wifi. An outstanding breakfast is available to fuel your day – varied and generous and just what every cyclist needs (there are even extras like bacon and French pancakes).

Durban-Corbières - Chez Noisette (Durban-Corbières)

Wouldn't life be good if all cycling cafes doubled as B&Bs (and vice versa)? As the name suggests, Café Vélo Nevers is a cafe with a  special focus on cyclists. And, as an added bonus, it also has a B&B upstairs that sleeps 9 riders. There are 2 rooms sleeping 2 and 3 people with a shared kitchen. There is also a self-catering apartment that sleeps 4 people. The cafe is in Nevers, right on the EuroVelo 6 Loire à Velo bike route and also ideally placed for anyone heading down to join the Burgundy wine and canal routes. There are rooms with wonderful views over the Loire, plus it goes without saying that there is stacks of nourishment on offer to fuel a day on the bike – as well as the best coffee in town. The owners, Anna and Charles, are local (English-speaking) cyclists with plenty of local route info for tourers, road riders and gravel riders. Les Chambres de l'Abbaye is a convent converted to a hotel in the heart of Saintes on the Flow Velo bike route that links the Atlantic Coast to Thiviers in the Dordogne. It's one of France's newest and more interesting rural bike routes, and passes through the vineyards of Cognac, among other highlights. Les Chambres de l'Abbaye is a special place to stay. This old convent building dates to the 11th century and has been lovingly restored. It's now a hotel and function centre but that's only half the story, with the abbey also still holding musical festivals and recitals in tune with its wonderful past. It's also accueil velo-accredited and has its own bike section on the website. Arriving by bike here somehow seems fitting.
