There's a pool for post-ride dips and free wifi throughout the house and in the garden – the perfect place to plan your next day's routes (you can pick Merv and Jane's brains for ideas). Large garage for secure bike storage.

If you're looking for a cyclist-run base for biking in a lesser-explored area of France, than this could be it. The Marshall family are cyclists who have spent two years creating comfortable and modern self-catered gites nestled in the ancient Foret de La Double halfway betwen Bordeaux and Perigueux. The nearest town is Montpon-Menesterol, which is on 5 designated local cycling circles. It's also on the Lawrence of Arabia bike route and the new Velo-route Voie verte de la Vallee de L'Isle, which goes all the way through to Perigueux. It's a safe car-free route along the river valley. The area also has lots to offer mountain bikers and families. The national park of La Jemaye is 20 minutes away and has beautiful cycling routes around the lake with places to swim and picnic. The gites themselves have modern creature comforts plus a safe storage area for bikes (there's a reliable repair shop in Montpon and hire bikes can be delivered to the door). The gites provide a beautiful-urban-meets rural space for cyclists of all levels. There's even a heated swimming pool for post-ride relaxation.

Chalus – Self-catering Barn in Chalus

Renovated barn from which to discover the cycling secrets of Limousin

Ballengeas

Haute Vienne, Limousin (Nouvelle Aquitaine)
Email: barninchalus@gmail.com

Price from: From 3 nights for €200 (please enquire about other prices and lengths of stay)

Open: March to October

Châlus is situated in the department of the Haute-Vienne, a relatively undiscovered area, meaning quiet roads and peaceful trails, including the 180km 'La Route Richard Coeur de Lion' which runs close by and follows Richard the Lionheart's journey as he battled against King Philip of France (Lawrence of Arabia retraced the trail). Nineteen chateaux and ancient monuments make up the route; many of which can be found within the nearby area. The open plan stone barn still has many of its original features and there is a fully equipped dining area and galley kitchen. The first floor has an open plan bedroom and bathroom area, while the main bedroom has a double bed made from the building's reclaimed joists. There is also a beautiful Romeo and Juliet balcony overlooking the terrace and surrounding fields. A wood burner and heated bedrooms also means that this is a great option for spring and autumn when the region is at its most colourful.

Chalet Valhalla is an accueil velo-rated chalet in Chamonix, a French town famous for skiiing and, increasingly, a cycling hotspot – the 2017 Tour de France passed through here. The chalet is built with beautiful natural timbers and is a structure of grand proportions right in the heart of Chamonix. A minstrel’s gallery overlooks the sitting/dining room and from here you share the same breathtaking view that is enjoyed from below. Add to this contemporary look a touch of traditional Savoyarde style and there’s the WOW! factor. Ideal for large family groups or groups of cycling friends, the icing on the gateau is the hot tub in the garden with the best seat in the house, overlooking Mont Blanc. Valhalla's location hits the high notes, set in an idyllic spot beside the forest it is also only a short stroll to the centre. Chez Marie Rose is in a super, unspoilt area in the Périgord-Limousin Natural Park 17km from Nontron. The owner Janet is keen to offer her cottage as friendly, affordable accommodation for cyclists. A pleasant 5km rural diversion from the Flow Velo bike route from the Atlantic Coast to Thiviers (and then on to Perigueux), this is an ideal place to take a rest as you cross from the Charente into the Dordogne (or vice versa). This is especially true as bike-friendly accommodation in this area is stil somewhat under-developed. The nearest signposted bike track is at the bottom of garden, linking you in to local tracks and backroad routes. Janet is a local cyclist and has ridden many of the route variations so can advise on what's best for your legs! She also has a healthy collection of IGN maps and local cycle circuit maps to share. There is hardly any motor traffic in this area, and cycling is a real joy. The cottage sleeps three. It's self-catering but you can order welcome meals and/or breakfasts if needed. French and English spoken.

As the name suggests, Cycling Chez Nous is run by cyclists - in this case Sue and Phil, who are keen to share this lesser-explored area of France with the rest of us. They are in a perfect area for cycling – and they know it like the backs of their hands. They are just 2.5km from the lovely voie verte (greenway) that runs from Oradour-sur-Vayres to Chalus. It's perfect for a (flat) return trundle but also ideal for tourers linking to the Lawrence of Arabia route. The roads here are scenic and largely traffic-free. I asked Sue to choose a favourite but she said it was impossible – the routes are so varied. "We have short local routes routes we can suggest, plus longer routes from 50km to 160kms on gpx files with varying elevations," she said. "We live in an almost untouched cycling paradise, bordering the Dordogne and the Charente. I have to pinch myself each time I cycle." The village is also within reach of Oradour-sur-Glane, which holds a special place in French history and is one of the most remarkable places Freewheeling France has ever been (there is more on the area here). The house itself is a pretty French farmhouse in an ancient hamlet. It has a lovely garden and a chestnut orchard with pear, apple and cherry trees. There is room for 6 people – with four in a self-catered gite and two in main house. B&B or self-catering is available. English and French spoken. Good connections to Limoges, Angouleme, Thivers for trains and airports. Ask Sue and Phil if you need picking up.

There can be fewer nicer places to stay than a self-catering gite at the foot of the Ventoux that comes with its own restaurant for when you're too tired to cook. But that's what David and Fiejette have at La Fleur Bleue Restaurant & Gîtes in Crestet. There are two self-contained gites, each with two bedrooms and sleeping up to 5. From your door you are a measly 4.6km from the start of the Malaucène Ventoux climb, or a 17km warm up ride to Bédoin. When you get back, there's a hot tub in the cherry tree orchard (complete with views of Ventoux to remind you where you've been). Cook in your own kitchen or enjoy lunch or dinner in the restaurant courtyard (yes, with more Ventoux views). For non-cycling partners or for rest days, there are Roman excavations in Vaison la Romaine to discover, plus the vineyards of the Cotes du Rhone. Free wifi. French, Dutch and English spoken.

The owners are keen to welcome cyclists, and have free bicycles available for guest use. The house itself is a modernised self-contained 'gite' that sleeps five people. It forms part of a typical old stone farmhouse. There's a double bedroom, twin bedroom and a single room. Outside there are mature gardens with high hedges enclosing the main gardens in front of the house. There are old barns and ample parking for both bikes and cars, plus an enclosed outside dining area for summer nights and an outdoor clothes line for drying cycling kit. La Ferme des Bélugues offers both B&B and self-catered accommodation. It's a home from home run by Karen and Spencer, both cyclists. Located just 6km from the start of the the Ventoux climb at Malaucène or 10km from Bedoin, it's the perfect base for an assault on one of the most iconic Tour de France summits. For gentler rides, the lavender fields and vineyards of Provence are within easy reach. Karen and Spencer host independent riders as well as cycle tour companies and pro riders, so it's fair to say they are local cycling experts. They arrived here four years ago and have lovingly renovated the house to ensure it is cycling friendly while also retaining its original charm and character. All the facilities are geared towards cyclists: there's a pool for post-ride cooling off (and perfect for non-cycling partners and friends) and a stunning bike room, while extra services such as bike hire, massages, and yoga can be arranged. In all there are 5 double rooms plus a really well set-up self-catering gite for two people.
