Bike route from Nancy to Pont-à-Mousson

This 35km bike route from Nancy to Pont-à-Mousson in Lorraine forms part of the Moselle River route. Thanks to Mike Wells for letting me include it on the site.

Start Nancy, Rue Molitor (196m) Finish Pont-à-Mousson bridge (181m)
Distance 35km
Waymarking Boucles de la Moselle to Frouard, then none.

Nancy to Pont-a-Mousson After leaving Nancy on the asphalt cycle tracks of the Boucles de la Moselle, following the Meurthe for 17km, the route follows the navigable Moselle canalisée north through a wide, mostly agricultural valley with scattered industrial locations.

Although a route has been published for the stretch from Custines to Pont-à-Mousson, very little progress has been made in constructing the necessary infrastructure. As a result, a minor road is followed for 10km, followed by 8km on gravel or stony towpaths.

From the canal bridge on Rue Molitor in Nancy, head east-north-east on a cycle lane beside Rue de Tomblaine, part of a one-way system.

Just before the first road junction turn left across the road onto a cycle track left of Rue des Sables.

Cross the road at a T-junction onto the opposite side of Ave Charles Étienne Collignon and turn right on a cycle track that continues over two crossroads, then the impressive Pont de la Concorde dual-use cycle and pedestrian bridge over the Meurthe.

Once over the river, drop down and turn sharply left then right along the riverbank, passing FC Nancy football stadium on the right.

Follow the river for 7.5km as it winds past Nancy, passing a dam and red brick Grands Moulins (mills) opposite left, and Malzéville, where the cycle track doglegs left then right under the bridge (4km, 191m).

Continue past Maxéville and Champigneulles (station), both on the opposite bank on the left. At Pont du Moulin dam (8.5km), near Lay-St-Christophe, turn right away from the Meurthe then turn sharply left on a dual-use bridge above a weir. Turn right along the opposite bank, passing industrial units left and Bouxières-aux-Dames opposite right.

Pass under a motorway bridge and immediately bear left, circling away from the river. When the track reaches the motorway again, turn right onto a cycle track beside a road and bear right back towards the Meurthe.

Pass Frouard grain silos on the left and continue between the road on your left and the river below right to reach a junction (13km, 188m).

Nancy to Pont-a-MoussonContinue along the riverbank, with a factory on your left.
Pass under a road bridge then circle left away from the river below offices.

Pass under an old railway bridge then double back left on the cycle track across this bridge to cross the Moselle (signed Custines).

Once over the bridge, bear right at a crossroads before bearing right then left across railway tracks to reach a cycle track along the riverbank.

Pass industrial units on your left and emerge onto a roundabout.

Turn right back over the Moselle to reach Custines (17.5km, 190m) (accommodation, refreshments).

At a roundabout, turn left to follow the D40 out of the village.

Continue for 10km through Millery (22.5km, 190m) and past Autreville-sur-Moselle.

Follow the D40, bearing right away from the river, parallel to the motorway, and continue through woods and open country to reach the hamlet of Pont de Mons (27.5km, 182m).

At a crossroads 250m past the hamlet, turn left (D10), continuing over the motorway and the Moselle.

Halfway over the river bridge, turn R onto a rough gravel towpath between the canal on your left and the Moselle on your right.

Continue on the towpath, passing a power station on the right, to reach Blénod lock.

Turn left over the canal and follow a road curving gently left then sharply right between a second lock on your left and an old factory on the right.

Nancy to Pont-a-MoussonContinue on a gravel track parallel to the canal past a large ironworks on the opposite bank left. Where this track forks, take the left fork (closest to the canal) and pass under a pipe bridge.

Emerge onto a road and follow it, bearing left over a bridge at Pont-à-Mousson lock.

Continue ahead over the millstream and turn immediately right along a road that becomes Quai Charles Françoise, to reach the end of the stage under the road bridge in Pont-à-Mousson (35.5km, 181m).

Accommodation, refreshments, a tourist office and a train station can all be found here in Pont-à-Mousson.

Thanks to Mike Wells for this route report, which is included in his Cicerone guide to the Moselle Cycle Route. Mike is also the auther of The Rhine Cycle Route, and has written this overview of that route for us.
