There's camping and then there's camping à la française. This site is super-conveniently located, about a 20-minute bike ride from the cycle/walking path to Mont-Saint-Michel. It’s spotlessly clean, has all the mod cons you'd need, and is right in the high street of Beauvoir, if you want to stock up on snacks and essentials. You name it, they've got it: bar, snack bar, shop selling bread, pastries and sundries, outdoor ping-pong tables, mini golf, trampoline, video games, boules, pinball, board games, bicycle hire, washing machines, wifi (paid-for), tumble dryers, BBQ rental and ticket sales for Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey. You never, ever have to leave. Okay, maybe to go and see Mont-Saint-Michel. It also got accueil vélo status, so they tick all the bike boxes. You can book tent pitches via their official website or chalets here.

Montebourg - Chambres d'hôtes les Clématites en Cotentin

1 Rue Saint-Clair

Manche, Normandy

Price from: €57 per double room

Open: All year

I stayed here while cycling in Normandy and found it both affordable and cheerful. The owner Patricia is a delight, cheerful and very welcoming (anyone who asks if you'd like a hot chocolate for breakfast before she even shows you to your room wins points with me). The rooms are big, bright and colourful with eclectic wallpaper and comfortable beds. The bathrooms are less impressive and a little bit dated, but there are hot towel racks and radiators for drying cycling clothes and, as a one-night stop close to town, this place is great. One room also has a fridge and microwave; it's also on the road – it's not noisy by city standards but the other two rooms are at the back and quieter, one with garden views. You do need to be aware that you need to arrive after 5pm unless you've let Patricia know in advance (you can do this when you book online); if you arrive early, you can get a key from a neighbour. We've stayed here – read our review.

Pont d'Ouilly - Le Relais du Commerce

Basic but affordable stop on the Velo Francette route

14690 Pont d'Ouilly
Calvados, Normandy

Price from: €61

Open: All year

We stayed at the bike-friendly Le Relais du Commerce on the final stretch of our La Velo Francette ride. In the heart of Suisse Normande, this is arguably one of the prettiest stretches of the ride. The hotel itself is pretty basic, but it's good value and clean. There's a dedicated bike shed at the rear of the hotel, and a restaurant onsite serving local fare; the food was OK but we'd probably try a local eatery next time. Rooms at the front of the hotel open up on to the balcony which overlooks the town (the balcony is ideal for airing wet and smelly cycling kit too). Free wifi. Double and triple rooms, all with en suites.

Saint-Armand - Le Manoir du Butel

Secluded country B&B run by cyclists

11 Le Butel
50160 Saint-Amand
Manche, Normandy

Price from: €55

Open: All year

View map

Seriously! Who wouldn't want to ride their bike down this driveway? Le Manoir du Butel is a farmhouse B&B run by cyclists near Saint-Armand, east of the Tour du Manche route at Le Mesnil-Raoult (17km south-east of St-Lo). The French owners tell us that they regularly welcome touring cyclists and that they are indeed cyclists themselves (MTB riders). They will be able to help with local routes etc. The B&B is around 4km from the nearest large town with a restaurant, but the owners say they are happy to take you there if your legs aren't up to the task after a day on the bike. What more could you want?!

Manche, Normandy

Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise was recommended to us by Bob Zeller, one of our contributors, who stayed here while touring in Normandy. There is a garage for the bikes, an excellent breakfast on offer, and the owner recommended a brilliant restaurant just a three-minute walk away. Called the Auberge John Steele, the restaurant is named after the American paratrooper whose parachute was entangled in the village church’s steeple on D-Day. It had excellent food and good service. Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise itself is called a B&B but it's more like a hotel. It doesn’t usually open for arriving guests until te afternoon, but if you get there earlier, there is a small restaurant/coffee shop called E Castel at the start of the same street. The coffee wass excellent, as were the pastries. It was run by a couple of British expats. All in all, Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise is an ideal base for exploring this section of the D-Day beaces area. Don't miss the Airborne Museum, which we visited on this trip.
